Ever noticed that one of the biggest differences between Video home-movies and Super-8 home movies is that practically every frame of the Super-8 home movie is cherished, whereas in video, it's a hit or miss operation.
There are incredibly beautiful moments in video home movies, but don't you find that the people in video home-movies are put on trial?
We end up judging the people in the video by their conduct. The un-edited home video becomes a battle between trying to appreciate the footage versus noticing who is being a snot and a spoiled brat, etc...
If a kid crys in a video-home movie because they want an ice-cream cone, judgements will be passed by everyone watching the home movie...if you view that same scene shot with Super-8mm, the crying will produce a different set of emotions, and the shot will be significantly shorter. But the answer is not to turn off the microphone of the video camera, because the only thing worse than long video home-movies, are long silent video home-movies.
The answer is to understand that not all things benefit by being longer, and that is just one of the many benefits of shooting Super-8 film.

I totally agree...even my super 8 sound home movies are more interesting and more tightly edited (in camera) than my VHS and mini DV videos...the super 8 also provides a warmth and coziness missing from the videos...I did shoot some mini-dv on Xmas eve, and did set up one of my photoflood heads on a light stand, despite my soon to be ex's objections, and that did greatly improve the picture...but the super 8 is still more fun!
